Japan once had hundreds of castles. Today only twelve retain their original wooden keep — the rest were demolished, burned, or rebuilt after the war. Matsumoto is one of only five designated National Treasures among them, alongside Himeji, Hikone, Inuyama, and Matsue. Osaka and Nagoya castles are postwar concrete museums; Matsumoto's black keep — "the Crow Castle" — has stood since the 1590s, its wooden beams, staircases, and gun ports unchanged.
Of the twelve, Matsumoto is also the closest to Tokyo — a single day's drive there and back, rather than an overnight trip. The castle rises from a moat at the edge of the city with the Japan Alps behind it, one of the most photographed skylines in the country, and one your driver can reach in about three hours from central Tokyo.

Inside, the keep's original staircases are steep and narrow — a genuine 16th-century structure rather than a museum reconstruction — so budget time to climb slowly and take in the view of the city and the surrounding mountains from the top floor.
Matsumoto beyond the castle
A short walk from the castle, Nawate-dori — the "Frog Street" — follows the Metoba River past small shops and cafés. Nearby, Nakamachi-dori is lined with black-and-white kura-zukuri warehouse buildings, now boutiques and craft shops. History travellers can add the Kyu-Kaichi School, a Meiji-era schoolhouse and National Treasure in its own right. For lunch, Shinshu soba — buckwheat noodles from the surrounding Nagano highlands — is the local specialty.
The Karuizawa detour
On the drive home, the expressway passes Karuizawa, and your driver can build in a stop at the old Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza shopping street or the Prince Shopping Plaza outlets for an hour or two before continuing to Tokyo. Matsumoto Castle by season
The black keep reads differently in every season — pink against spring cherry blossoms, framed by summer's clear alpine air, mirrored in autumn colour, and capped white in winter snow.
Cherry Blossoms on the Moat
Around 300 cherry trees ring the castle moat, framing the black keep in pink from early to mid-April. It's one of Japan's most photographed cherry blossom scenes, with Matsumoto's timing typically a week or so behind Tokyo.
Evening Illumination
During peak bloom, the castle and surrounding trees are lit at night, and the keep's reflection appears in the moat water — a striking contrast to the daytime view.
Mild, Clear Days
Spring temperatures in Matsumoto average 8–17°C, with the Japan Alps often still snow-capped behind the castle — a dramatic backdrop that fades as the season progresses.
Quieter Castle Town
Outside the exact blossom peak, Nawate-dori and Nakamachi-dori are comfortably uncrowded, making it easy to browse the shops and warehouses at a relaxed pace.
Cooler Highland Air
At around 590m elevation, Matsumoto runs several degrees cooler than Tokyo in summer, and the surrounding mountain air is noticeably drier and clearer.

A dusting of snow on the dark castle roofline, set against a white moat and bare trees, is one of Matsumoto's most striking winter images — and one of the quietest times to visit.

Winter air is Japan's clearest. The Northern Alps behind the castle are typically sharp and fully visible, without the summer haze.

Frequently asked questions
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
All Hire Taxi Japan prices are per vehicle, not per person. A Toyota Alphard (1–4 passengers) is ¥105,000 for the full day; a Toyota HiAce (up to 9 passengers) is ¥120,000. Larger parties can book multiple vehicles in convoy.
Why is Matsumoto Castle special?
Matsumoto is one of only twelve Japanese castles with a surviving original wooden keep, and one of five designated National Treasures. Unlike Osaka or Nagoya castles, which are postwar concrete reconstructions, Matsumoto's black keep — nicknamed "the Crow Castle" — has stood since the 1590s. Are the stairs inside the castle keep steep?
Yes. Because the keep is an original 16th-century wooden structure, the internal staircases are original too — some at roughly 61 degrees, closer to a ladder than a staircase. There is no elevator. Elderly visitors or those travelling with small children should plan accordingly, and note there is no accessible route to the top floor.
Can the Karuizawa stop be skipped?
Yes. The Karuizawa detour on the return drive is entirely optional. Skipping it shortens the day from 11–12 hours to about 9.5–10 hours. Just let your driver know at booking or on the day.
How long is the Matsumoto Castle tour?
