South Iwate
& Miyagi
UNESCO World Heritage temples at Hiraizumi, the dramatic gorges of Geibikei, and Matsushima Bay — one of Japan's three most celebrated landscapes.
The ancient north —
UNESCO gold and pine-island seas
Southern Iwate and Miyagi Prefecture hold two of Japan's most significant cultural and natural sites. Hiraizumi, the 12th-century capital of the Fujiwara clan, is a UNESCO World Heritage site centred on Chuson-ji Temple — home to the Konjikido, a golden hall that has survived eight centuries intact and is widely considered one of the finest examples of Heian-period architecture.
Geibikei Gorge in Ichinoseki is a 2km stretch of dramatic limestone walls rising from a slow-moving river — accessible only by hand-poled wooden boat. The silence here is remarkable. Matsushima Bay, just east of Sendai, is one of Japan's Nihon Sankei — the three officially celebrated landscapes. Over 260 pine-covered islands of every shape fill the bay, best viewed from the Kanrantei pavilion or by small boat cruise.
The trip is comfortably done as a 1N2D with a ryokan stay in either Ichinoseki, Matsushima, or Sendai. A fast day trip is also possible from Tokyo by leaving early — your driver handles the 4–5 hour drive each way.
Four sites, two prefectures,
one private itinerary
The Konjikido — a fully gold-leafed hall housing the mummified remains of three Fujiwara lords — is one of Japan's most extraordinary interiors. The forested hillside complex also includes Kyozo scripture hall and the Sankozo treasure museum.
A 2km stretch of vertical limestone cliffs above a turquoise river, navigated by a flat-bottomed boat poled in silence by a boatman who also sings traditional ballads. One of the quietest, most atmospheric experiences in northern Japan.
Over 260 pine-topped islands scattered across a calm bay — one of Japan's three officially designated scenic views. The Kanrantei pavilion, Zuiganji Temple (a Zen masterpiece), and optional boat cruises make this a full half-day on its own.
The largest city in Tohoku, built by the one-eyed warlord Date Masamune. Aoba Castle ruins sit above the city with views over the plain. The city itself is known for its tree-lined boulevards, Tanabata Festival, and excellent local cuisine — gyutan (beef tongue), zunda sweets, and fresh seafood.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a private South Iwate & Miyagi tour cost?
Pricing for the South Iwate & Miyagi tour is quoted individually because it is a 1-night-2-day itinerary — submit an inquiry with your dates and group size and we respond with a full quote. Day tours elsewhere start from ¥75,000 per vehicle.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
All Hire Taxi Japan prices are per vehicle, not per person. A Toyota Alphard seats 1–4 passengers and a Toyota HiAce seats up to 9, so the per-person cost drops sharply for families and groups. Larger parties can book two or three vehicles in convoy — up to 27 passengers.
What is special about Hiraizumi?
Hiraizumi was the 12th-century capital of the northern Fujiwara clan and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its centerpiece, the Konjikido at Chuson-ji, is a fully gold-leafed hall that has survived intact for nearly 900 years.
Is Matsushima worth visiting?
Matsushima Bay is one of Japan's three officially celebrated scenic views (Nihon Sankei) — over 260 pine-covered islands scattered across a calm bay. Combined with Zuiganji Temple and fresh oysters, it makes an ideal overnight pairing with Hiraizumi.
Does the South Iwate & Miyagi tour include hotel pickup?
Yes. Your English-speaking driver meets you in the lobby of your hotel in Tokyo (or any address you choose) and returns you door-to-door at the end of the day. Luggage, strollers, and shopping bags travel in the car with you.
Do the drivers speak English?
Yes. All Hire Taxi Japan chauffeurs communicate in English and are licensed professional drivers. They handle navigation, parking, and timing — and share local recommendations — but are drivers rather than licensed tour guides.
How long is the South Iwate & Miyagi tour?
Plan for 1 night 2 days (or a long day trip). Because the tour is private, the schedule is flexible — you can extend time at any stop, skip others, or ask your driver to reorder the day around weather and crowds.
How do I book or ask a question?
Book online via the Japan Tour Package page on hiretaxijapan.com, or message us on WhatsApp at +81 70 1265 4460 for a custom plan. We confirm availability and your driver's details within a few hours.
