Northern Tohoku:
Aomori & Hirosaki
Hirosaki's pink castle moats, Nebuta lantern drums, and the wild shore of the Tsugaru Strait — Japan's deep north at its most elemental.
Japan's Deep North — Without the Tourist Density
Aomori Prefecture is the most remote region in Tohoku — and the most rewarding. Hirosaki Castle's pink moat is Japan's most celebrated cherry blossom site outside Kyoto. The Nebuta Matsuri (August) is one of Japan's top three festivals. Lake Towada, a vast volcanic caldera lake straddling Aomori and Akita, offers pristine reflections of forest and sky. This is Japan without the tourist density.
The drive north from Tokyo to Aomori takes around 5–6 hours through the Tohoku heartland. Hirosaki, an old castle town with preserved merchant districts and Japan's most famous apple orchards, occupies the first afternoon. Aomori city, with its striking Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE on the harbour, rounds out Day 1. Day 2 follows the Oirase Stream — one of Japan's most beautiful river walks — to Lake Towada.
Aomori is a region where seasons feel absolute. The cherry blossoms are Japan's most dramatic. The summer Nebuta festival is overwhelming in the best possible way. The autumn foliage along Oirase Gorge is genuinely world-class. Winter buries everything in metres of snow.
Aomori & Hirosaki Through the Year
Japan's #1 cherry blossom festival: late April to early May. Over 2,600 cherry trees surround the castle moat. When petals fall they form a carpet of pink floating on the water — considered the most romantic cherry blossom scene in Japan. Book accommodation months in advance.
The castle grounds include a formal garden with blossoming cherry trees reflected in the inner moat. The small five-storey castle keep — one of Japan's few surviving original keeps — sits above a moat turning pink with fallen petals.
The Oirase Stream comes alive in May with fresh green moss, tumbling waterfalls, and clear snowmelt water. The 14km trail along the stream from Yakeyama to Lake Towada is one of Japan's finest gentle walks.
Japan's largest caldera lake at 327m depth emerges from winter ice in early May. The forest reflections on the lake surface in spring — beech and birch coming into new leaf — are glassy and perfectly still.

August 2–7: one of Japan's top three festivals. Giant illuminated floats of warriors and mythical figures — some standing 5 metres tall and 9 metres wide — parade through Aomori to taiko drums and flute. Book accommodation 6+ months in advance. An experience unlike any other in Japan.
The Oirase Stream in July and August runs clear and cool through deep green forest. The trail is mossy and shaded. Waterfalls drop into the stream at regular intervals — a constant soundtrack. The contrast with Tokyo's heat is extreme.
Lake Towada's vast caldera shimmers in summer sunshine. Boat tours cross the lake. The surrounding beech forests are at their densest and greenest. The Towada Art Center's outdoor sculptures are best seen in summer.
Hirosaki is Japan's apple capital. In summer, the apple orchards around the city are in full leaf. The city's apple-themed shops and cafés are open year-round, but the orchards themselves are most atmospheric in the growing season.

The 14km Oirase Stream corridor in mid-October to early November is considered one of Japan's most beautiful autumn walks. Beech and maple in crimson and gold overhang the clear stream. Waterfalls dropping through autumn colour. Peak: around October 20–November 5.
The forested rim of the Towada caldera turns crimson and gold around the same time as Oirase. Reflections of autumn forest in the deep blue lake are extraordinary — the combination of lake blue, forest red, and October sky is uniquely striking.
Aomori's apple harvest runs October–November. The orchards around Hirosaki are laden with fruit. Roadside stalls sell fresh-pressed apple juice and Aomori's famous apple pie. The apple orchards beside the castle grounds are particularly atmospheric.
The castle grounds transform in autumn: maples along the moat turn deep crimson, and the castle keep is framed by fall colour. After spring's cherry blossoms, autumn is the second-most spectacular season here — and considerably less crowded.

Hirosaki receives some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan — 2–3 metres in the castle grounds. The castle keep rising above snow-buried gardens is a fairy-tale image. The Snow Lantern Festival in February fills the moat area with hundreds of hand-made snow lanterns at dusk.
February: Aomori City hosts a snow lantern and snow sculpture festival along the harbour and central areas. The combination of illuminated snow sculptures and the cold harbour air is entirely unique to the Japanese deep north.
In January and February, the Oirase Stream partially freezes. Waterfalls become pillars of ice. The gorge trail is covered in snow and dramatically silent. A completely different walk from any other season — austere and otherworldly.
Lake Towada freezes at the edges in the coldest winters. The surrounding forest is buried in snow. The deep north in winter is Japan's most extreme seasonal landscape — stark, beautiful, and almost entirely without tourists.

Two vehicles.
One formation.
When the group exceeds what a single vehicle can hold, we don't hand you off to a bus company. We send two — or three — of our own vehicles together, coordinated as a fleet. One lead driver, one group chat, one point of contact. Every vehicle in the convoy is ours. Every driver is ours. That is what makes it different from a chartered bus.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a private Aomori & North Iwate tour cost?
Pricing for Tohoku tours is quoted individually based on dates, route, and group size — submit an inquiry and we respond with a full quote. Day tours elsewhere start from ¥75,000 per vehicle.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
All Hire Taxi Japan prices are per vehicle, not per person. A Toyota Alphard seats 1–4 passengers and a Toyota HiAce seats up to 9, so the per-person cost drops sharply for families and groups. Larger parties can book two or three vehicles in convoy — up to 27 passengers.
What are the highlights of Aomori?
Hirosaki Castle and its cherry-blossom moats, the Oirase Gorge stream walk, Lake Towada, and Hachinohe's morning market — plus the Nebuta Museum's full-size festival floats in Aomori city.
When should I visit Oirase Gorge?
Fresh green from May to June and autumn colors in late October are the peak windows. The 9km riverside path is gentle, and with a private car your driver meets you at the far end — no doubling back.
Does the Aomori & North Iwate tour include hotel pickup?
Yes. Your English-speaking driver meets you in the lobby of your hotel in Tokyo (or any address you choose) and returns you door-to-door at the end of the day. Luggage, strollers, and shopping bags travel in the car with you.
Do the drivers speak English?
Yes. All Hire Taxi Japan chauffeurs communicate in English and are licensed professional drivers. They handle navigation, parking, and timing — and share local recommendations — but are drivers rather than licensed tour guides.
How long is the Aomori & North Iwate tour?
Plan for 1 night 2 days. Because the tour is private, the schedule is flexible — you can extend time at any stop, skip others, or ask your driver to reorder the day around weather and crowds.
How do I book or ask a question?
Book online via the Japan Tour Package page on hiretaxijapan.com, or message us on WhatsApp at +81 70 1265 4460 for a custom plan. We confirm availability and your driver's details within a few hours.
